Mentorship & Teaching

Teaching:

I enjoy teaching and getting to see students grow in their understanding of science and succeed in the classroom. I bring my passion for biology and science communication into my classroom and aim to help students achieve their goals.

Courses at Centenary University:
  • Microbiology
  • Microbiology Lab
  • Genetics
  • Genetics Lab
  • General Biology I
  • Senior Biology Seminar
  • Nutrition

Courses at UMass Boston:
  • Gateway Seminar 187: Science Communication
  • Microbiome and Disease Ecology 381/382: Lab Mentor (TA)
  • Biology 112: General Biology, TA

Mentoring:

I have had the opportunity to mentor stellar students in biology during my time in graduate school and as an assistant professor. Here, with their permission, I wanted to showcase some of my students and their research.

Jaimy presents his award-winning poster at the annual School for the Environment Colloquium.
Jaimy Jabon is a Ronald E. McNair Scholar and is now a Masters student in the Woodhams Lab at UMass Boston. Jaimy worked as a senior undergraduate Biology major in the Woodhams lab with Amanda Tokash-Peters. Jaimy has focused on interactions of temperature and Wolbachia and has presented his work at several conferences. He also won the prize for best undergraduate poster award at the annual School for the Environment Colloquium.

Sergio Lopez is an undergraduate Biology major and began his work in the Woodhams lab with Amanda as an REU student in Summer 2019. Sergio's work has focused on understanding how immune genes in mosquitoes are influenced by temperature and Wolbachia.

If you are a current Centenary University student looking to gain research experience in the Tokash-Peters lab, please email me at my standard Centenary University email. Typically, students wanting to do research are asked to attend at least a few microbiome journal club meetings prior to working on a research project.
